The Salt Lake Temple was built of quartz monzonite, the source of this stone is the cottonwood stock found in little cottonwood canyon and surrounding area south east of Salt Lake City. The LDS people started building the Temple on February 14, 1853 and completed the 253,015 square foot Temple in April 1893. The Temple took 40 years to complete. The first picture below is the approximate site for the quarrying of the stone. The second picture is a close up view of the stone.
